Edison is a young puppy that came to us with his mama, Diana. When they first arrived, staff went to check on the new babies. Four out of the five puppies were doing normal puppy things like jumping, yelling, screeching, and generally making sure everyone in the building knew they had arrived. And, then there was Edison. Sleeping soundly, peacefully, and completely unbothered by the tiny puppy opera preforming around him. That was the moment we started to realize Edison was deaf.
Shortly after, we noticed that his play style and the way he communicates with other dogs is a little different than most puppies. Not wrong. Not sad. Just different. Edison experiences the world in his own way, and now he is learning how to navigate it with the help of some very special people and dogs.
Edison is currently living in a foster home with older pups who are helping teach him the ropes on how to be a dog. And the best part? His human foster sister is also hard of hearing, which is exactly how she convinced her amazing mom that they were the perfect family to help this sweet boy until his forever home comes along. Honestly, she had a very strong case and we appreciate how amazing their entire family is.
His foster family has started working on basic sign language with him, and Edison is picking things up quickly. He is smart, sweet, curious, and already showing us that he is more than capable of learning, he just needs someone willing to learn with him.
One of our volunteers recently watched Edison prance around the play yard and said it was like watching pure joy. And that may be the best way to describe him. Edison is not sitting around wondering what he is missing. He is busy living, learning, playing, and lighting up every space he enters in his own quiet, beautiful way.
We expect Edison to be medium sized when full grown, and we are looking for experienced dog owners who understand that this little guy will need extra guidance, structure, patience, and commitment as he grows. Deaf puppies can live amazing, full, joyful lives, but Edisons future family should be ready to keep helping him build confidence, communication, and good doggy manners.
Edison does not need pity. He needs a family who sees how special he is, believes in what he can become, and is ready to help him shine. And trust us, this little boy is already lighting up every room in his own quiet way.
