BILLY GOODE

Rhode Island. WE HAVE UNEARTHED A LEGEND. For those who remember Billy Goode’s on Marlborough Street in Newport, this one’s for you. A place so deeply embedded in Newport history that Billy Goode himself secured LIQUOR LICENSE NUMBER ONE on December 6, 1933, the day after Prohibition ended.

NUMBER. ONE. The man wasn’t waiting for the ink to dry on the repeal. He had a business to run and a community to hydrate. And now, nearly a century later, we’d like to introduce his spiritual successor.

MEET BILLY GOODE. He’s part of our Newport and Bristol inspired crew, celebrating the legendary establishments that gave generations of locals memories, questionable decisions, and stories best left untold. Billy is the kind of guy who walks into a bar, knows everyone, orders his usual, and settles into the same seat he’s occupied since the Roosevelt administration. He’s calm, charming, wonderful with other dogs, and VERY particular about where he’s going.

Taking him for a walk? LOVELY. Turn down a street he doesn’t approve of? ABSOLUTELY NOT. “I’ve been coming here for 93 years, Barbara. WE DON’T GO THAT WAY.” A little encouragement and he’s perfectly happy to continue. The man simply appreciates being consulted.

Billy also keeps his kennel spotless, politely waits to do his business outside, and has the kind of manners you would expect from someone who’s spent decades cultivating a respectable reputation in a deeply questionable establishment. And unlike most people leaving Billy Goode’s at 1 AM, he walks in a straight line. He doesn’t need a nightclub, a yacht, or an invitation to the Breakers. Give this Newport gentleman a comfortable place to sit, good company, and a leisurely stroll and he’s thrilled.

LET’S GET THIS GENTLEMAN OFF HIS BARSTOOL AND ONTO SOMEBODY’S COUCH. He’s been waiting nearly a century for retirement and frankly, his pension is terrible.

P.S. Billy has requested that we clarify he did NOT violate Prohibition. He simply chose not to participate. His attorney has advised him to make no further statements.
